General questions about sedex

Can I use sedex for data transfer in my business case?

sedex is the platform of the Swiss Confederation for secure, traceable and reliable data transport between business applications in the area of e-Government at the federal, cantonal and municipal levels. If there is a regulatory basis, third-party applications can also be integrated via sedex. If you are interested, please contact sedex.

Questions about the sedex Client Container Image

Should I use the container version or the classic installation?

For more than 13 years, the sedex Client has been available as a classic installation for multiple operating systems. This classic operating mode has proven itself and there is a lot of experience with it. If you can run applications classically on hardware servers or in virtual machines, then this is still a valid way to run a sedex Client.

As of November 8, 2021, the 1.0 version of the sedex Client Docker image is available. If your IT operation has the required infrastructure and know-how, you can now also run the sedex Client as a Docker container.

Can I migrate from a classic installation of the sedex Client to the Docker version?

Yes. The migration from one sedex Client installation to a new one is essentially identical whether the target is a Docker Client installation or a classic installation on a new host.

Can I run the sedex Clients for multiple participants in parallel on the same container platform?

Yes. You can run sedex Client Docker containers for multiple sedex participants on the same container platform (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, etc.) at the same time. However, these are completely independent of each other and each have their own resources such as external storage (volumes), service ports, etc.

How does the sedex Client Docker container differ from a classic installation?

Functionally, there is no difference between sedex Clients as Docker Container and classic installation. This is because the normal sedex Client for Linux is installed in a sedex Client Docker container. The only difference is the way the software is distributed, installed and operated.

Can a sedex Client Docker container exchange sedex messages with a classic sedex Client of another participant?

Yes. Functionally, there is no difference between sedex Clients as Docker Container and classic installation.

Does the sedex Client Docker Container offer additional features compared to a classic installation?

Functionally, there is no difference between sedex Clients as Docker Container and classic installation. However, running a sedex Client as a Docker Container on a container platform (e.g. a Kuberntes cluster) can result in non-functional (operational) advantages such as higher availability, faster recoverability, easier updates, etc.
